LOSING A SIBLING TO SICKLE CELL DISEASE

Image
The issues/topics I address on sickle cell are all from a personal standpoint and thankfully there is information out there on all the facts, statistics and medical breakthroughs on the disease. I only speak on the personal experiences my family and I have to go through to hopefully let people understand the numerous issues a family living with this are experiencing and how those of us who are carriers with siblings who have the disease cope. It is my sincere hope that those who are outsiders looking in, will gain a little more insight on the struggles a family faces without having to read through thousands of literature merely on the subject. For me personally, I will continue to use this platform as an outlet to help me cope as best as I can with losing my brother to this horrible disease.

DO ALL SICKLERS HAVE A DISTINCTIVE LOOK?

If I had never read that Tionne Watkins ( T-Boz from the group TLC ),the late Prodigy from the hip hop duo Mob Deep or Laranz Tate were three of many celebrities who had sickle cell anaemia, I would probably have never been able to tell just by looking at them that they had this disease. Most teens with sickle cell have some degree of anaemia and may look pale and some may develop jaundice, leg ulcers, bone or joint damage, gall stones among other possible problems.

WHY WE SHOULDN'T TREAT SICKLERS DIFFERENTLY FROM OTHERS (AS KIDS OR ADULTS)

That's my kid sister with me and though she is 25 now, sometimes we still treat her like she is 12. The urge and the need to want to protect and fuss over our loved ones who have sickle cell disease can be difficult to control because we love them so much and just don't want to see them get hurt. I know my brother didn't really enjoy it when my mum would constantly fuss over him as a child and even at age 33. I can understand that need when they are children because they still need to be taken care of and supervised but at the same time, we should be mindful about making them feel like something is wrong with them or that they are different from others, even if they are.

NEW BUSINESS VENTURE: TOPE AKWADA EDITING

Image
Officially launching my other side hustle and that is my Freelance Editing Company. I am looking to work with anyone who has either played with the idea of writing a book but only ever got as far as penning a few notes and drafts to those who actually have a manuscript but haven't had it edited yet. It costs a pretty penny to have an established publishing house edit your work but I do it for a fee you can certainly afford. You may not even be ready to have your work published yet but just knowing that you have it ready to go at any time is what I am here to help you do.
