Sickle Cell can be terminal. Complications and crises can be so intense and severe that if not managed effectively can lead to death. Unfortunately, I know this firsthand because my brother passed away from being mismanaged by his doctor.

With the FDA focused on new drugs to help treat and improve the quality of life for patients and already approved methods of management, there are some basic no nonsense ways to battle sickle cell on your own.

1. SCD varies widely from person to person and because pain severity can range from mild to severe, patients must absolutely know what their pain triggers are and avoid them at all costs.

2. Always be on the lookout for possible problems brought on by SCD. Should you start experiencing things like chest pain, a high fever, belly swelling, breathing problems, severe pain, seizure or painful erection (for men), get medical attention immediately.

3, Use pain meds with caution. Some over-the-counter drugs like Advil, Aleve or Ibuprofen may affect your kidneys so be sure to speak with your doctor about what drugs you can safely use.

4. Stay away from the usual dangerous triggers like smoking, alcohol, stress, heavy physical labor, extreme temperatures and exercises.

Staying up-to-date on vaccines, healthy eating, getting adequate sleep and doing your best to avoid getting infections are also no nonsense ways to battle sickle cell. We all need to play our parts in the battle and hopeful eventual cure for sickle cell disease.

What are some no nonsense ways you employ to battle sickle cell? Comment below.

Always Love 💕
