HOW TO LOOK HEALTHIER THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

Looking and being healthy should be everyone's priority and not just those who have a health condition and are compelled to do so.

SCD as we know is a complex disease making it pertinent to see your doctor for regular checkups. Looking healthy throughout the year is not only restricted to eating right, getting enough rest, drinking fluids and taking medicine, there are other things you could be doing to look and feel healthier:

1. Exercise (in moderation) - Walking and biking are good ways to get that physical activity in to stay healthy. Aim for about 2 and a half hours of moderate exercise a week but talk to your doctor before starting a new routine. Remember not to overdo it and to rest whenever you feel tired.

2. Eat a balanced diet - This is especially important to make sure the body gets the energy, fiber, vitamins and minerals it needs to stay looking healthy year round. Drinking plenty of water is great but also drinking non-caffeinated fluids each day like ginger ale and green tea could also be good for you. However, be sure to ask your doctor/dietician how much of this you should be drinking.

3. Take Vitamin C, Fish Oil Supplements & Folic Acid - Vitamin C could help in correcting a deficiency, folic acid helps in making new red blood cells while fish oil supplements help reduce the frequency of severe pain episodes. You will agree that this is also beneficial to looking and staying healthy throughout the year.

4. Warm baths, heating pads and massages - These are other good ways to stay relaxed and soothed in an attempt to manage the pain associated with having sickle cell disease. Where the frequency of painful episodes are decreased, the more feasible it is to look and feel healthy.

All these are ways on how to look and feel healthier throughout the year for everyone but especially for sickle cell patients who can suffer complications, crisis and infections at any given period and sometimes without warning.

Always Love 💓
