 DAY 1: PRAY AGAINST THE IDOL OF MONEY:

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE: LUKE 16:13

What Is Idolatry?

There are a few definitions I would like to highlight:

1. It is the extreme admiration, love or reverence for something or someone

2. It is the worship of a physical object as a god

3. It is the immoderate attachment or devotion to something. And the last definition which I feel is most accurate is;

4. In Judaism & Christianity, it is the worship of someone or something other than God as though it were God.

The 1st of the 10 biblical commandments prohibits idolatry by declaring "You shall have no other gods before me"- see Exodus 20: 2-17

Question: Why Are Money/Wealth & Power So Alluring?

In the movies, books and even in life, there's always that individual, group, government or spirit entity that is persistent in the pursuit of money and power. Is it because having money and power commands the absolute respect, loyalty and admiration of others? Is it a means to exert dominance? Whatever the reasoning behind it is, the desire for money and power is a seductive spirit that demands the worship, pursuit and reverence of man.

In our anchor scripture, the bible is clear that man cannot serve both God and Mammon and as I have come to learn, Mammon is the Aramaic name for the Syrian god, Money. The hallmark of the spirit of mammon is a belief that we don't need God if we have money. It is an arrogant prideful spirit that promises everything only God can give.

Today's culture is consumed with the pursuit and acquisition of wealth. The narrative is that with money, you are somebody who everyone will respect and take seriously but without it, you are nobody! This constant pull towards having money and power is an idol that appears to command man's worship and total pre-occupation.

Question: Has Making Or Having Money Become An Idol In Your Life?

This is the question we should meditate on for today. Scripture says in 1 Timothy 6: 10 that " for the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows".

Allow the Holy Spirit lead you in earnest repentant prayer if you are or have been guilty of allowing your pursuit and love of money take the place of God in your life. He is faithful and willing to forgive but you must repent quickly and sincerely because God's stand on Idolatry of any kind is clear and you nor I do not wish to be on the receiving end of the wrath of God.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, Thank You for your mercy and grace that You so lovingly lavish on me even when I do not deserve it. You created every good and perfect thing for my benefit yet my sinful heart will often draw me away from you either subtly or deliberately. Forgive me for making an idol out of money that has enticed my heart away from You. Untangle this web of sin and forgive me for this spiritual adultery.

Keep me from worshipping any of the gifts You give instead of You. Remind me that the worship of money as an idol is to reject your grace and grieve your Spirit. My eyes and heart are fixed on You, Jesus, the author and finisher of my faith. In Jesus' Name, Amen
