Prior to 2021, the concept of Fasting was foreign to me. I failed to understand why starving myself of food was a requirement to spiritual growth so I could never fully commit to one. My perspective shifted last year when I felt God calling me higher in my walk with Him. I knew I would struggle but I was committed to being obedient and I knew my obedience would require Sacrifice on my part which is precisely what Fasting is.

What really is the point of Fasting?

Why does God require it and how do we do it correctly?

Like I mentioned earlier, Fasting is the sacrifice we make to God declaring to Him that we are willing to surrender, give up or lay down ourselves, desires, wants and needs in exchange for His Will

" Then Jesus said to His disciples, 'if any of you wants to be my follower

you must give up your own way take up your cross and follow me.

If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake,

you will save it" - Matthew 16: 24-25 (NLT)

Fasting tells God that He can trust you with more - more increase, more change. Abraham proved himself to be trustworthy when he was willing to give up his only son. The very one God promised him, then asked for as a sacrifice afterwards. Abraham knew that it was God who gave him Isaac in the first place so if He wanted him back, there was no doubt that He (God) could give him another. We know the story ends with God providing a ram in the place of Isaac and that provision was confirmation that Abraham's heart was completely sold out to God. God could trust him with more.

This is my WHY! I want God's TRUST! I want there to be nothing I can't surrender to Him should He require it. Be it food, my time, my gifts, my finances, my material things or as I'm discovering is my case, my sleep. In 2023, this is what going deeper with God for me looks like and with the help of His Holy Spirit, I receive the grace to submit the spirit of ownership in exchange for servanthood.

At the start of 2022, I did the Daniel Fast for the first time but went ahead to promise God that I would Fast the first 7 days of every month till the year ended. I kept my promise and received grace to keep that going in 2023. I'm committing to the 3 Day Esther Fast every month for the entire year to continue going deeper into intimacy with God. Of course I have my prayer requests but even those I'm laying at His feet because I want to be trusted with Kingdom Keys that unlock the mysteries of Heaven. These unlocked mysteries make it so that I can live the abundant life Christ came so that I might have.

My HOW is to stay away from food, commit my time to Bible Study and Prayer while avoiding the distractions of social media, wrestling and reality tv (my favorite pastimes). I know that God does not require perfection from me but my obedience and desire to do His Will.

I pray that in this new year all of us would be willing to lay down ourselves for God. Whatever we think we own or possess all belong to God and we are merely stewards of them. God can't use you or trust you if you are unwilling to give Him ALL of you. May we receive the grace to do so in Jesus' Name. AMEN!
